Hazelhurst Nursery Penarth

About Us

Hazelhurst is a friendly, caring place where kids can have fun, explore, and learn. Our team is here to support each child as they grow, discover new things, and develop a love for learning.

How We Work

We strive to provide a happy, caring and stimulating environment, encouraging children to learn through play to reach their full potential.

Play is how children naturally learn to solve problems, think strategically, relate to others, and manage life’s ups and downs. Play helps children learn how to learn – and to love learning!

We use the ‘Famly’ app to its best ability to ensure that you are always updated on what’s happening with your little one throughout their time with us. You’ll get regular photos and written updates, and can see everything from how often they’ve been changed, to how well they’ve eaten their meals!

Our History

Based on one of Penarth’s most prestigious roads, we opened our doors in 1990. Hazelhurst is still owned by its original owners, and managed by the next generation.

We have been offering high quality daycare to children in the Vale of Glamorgan for over 30 years.  Many of the parents (of children who attend) once came to Hazelhurst themselves as children. It’s our honour and privilege to look after the next generation.

We are based in a large, former Victorian finishing school. We use our generous space to provide a happy, engaging and loving environment to help your child to learn and grow.

Age Groups

 Dormice

Dormice are our under 2s, who naturally need the most support and care. The children in this age group have the benefit of 4 large airy spaces on the ground floor of our nursery, including a designated sleep/cot room, and a separate Dormice garden area for free-flow indoor/outdoor play.

Squirrels

Squirrels are between the ages of 2-3, when the children are leaving the ‘toddler’ stage and developing their speech alongside a wider understanding of their environment and the people around them.

Kingfishers

Kingfishers is made up our 3 year olds and upwards. These children are starting to become ready for school, and many join us either side of their school day (Please contact us for details of our before and after school ‘Wraparound Care’).

Additonal Learning Needs

At Hazelhurst Children’s Nursery, we are committed to the inclusion of all children. We have adapted our Additional Learning Needs Policy to reflect the changes brought in with the Additional Learning Needs Code Wales 2021, facilitated by the work of our Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo).

Early identification and intervention of emerging needs is critical to a child’s development. We therefore have a strong focus on training and supporting staff to identify emerging needs and have successfully introduced procedures to implement relevant strategies of support in all areas of development.

A child is identified as having ALN (additional learning needs) if they have a severe or profound learning difficulty or disability which will require additional support and provision when they reach statutory school age.

Our ALCNo works in partnership with various professionals including Health Visitors, Speech and Language therapists, The Vale Early Years Team and local schools to identify additional needs and follow Individual Development Plans (IDP’s). We are able to make referrals to these agencies on behalf of families and support their journey to accessing further support.

We are fully committed to working in partnership with families, including them in every aspect of discussion and the decision making process regarding their child’s needs. We pride ourselves on our open communication, ongoing updates, advice and strategies and positive and constructive family meetings.

Wrap Around

Once your child attends a School-nursery morning/afternoon session or full-time school, we offer sessions that ‘wrap-around’ these to include time at Hazelhurst, all their meals, and accompanied travel with familiar staff into the care of/collected from their class teacher.

Hazelhurst currently offers wrap-around to the following schools: Albert Primary, Evenlode, Sully, Ysgol Pen Y Garth, Victoria Primary, St Josephs and Fairfield Primary. Please note this may vary annually based on demand.

Due to the high demand for this service, wrap-around places are strictly limited. Requests are invited and availability is reviewed on an annual basis, with the year ending on the last day of the summer holidays. In the event of oversubscription, we will prioritise nursery-aged children first, then full- time school children who have a younger sibling attending Hazelhurst.

Please let us know your requirements as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
